House of Clowns

« Reply #200 on: March 24, 2010, 06:54:27 AM »

An update, more for my records than anything.

Trying a 'hypo' treatment on the sick orchid dottyback (and its non-sick) mate.  Went from 1.018 at noon to 1.011 at midnight (12hrs).  Usually people go from 1.027-1.010 in 24, so I think I got the timing right.

Larvae are 8 days old today.  Looking big and black.  A few deaths yesterday.  None today.  Tank temp 77F.  Drip Water changes ~50%daily.  Oto A started day 3.  BBS day 5,6,7,8.  Oto B1 started today.  Meta expected at day 10.  Must be at least 200 fry.

Its my understanding that going down in salinity is no problem for the fish its going up that needs time. What kinda of larvae are you talking about? Any luck with the dottybacks?

Thanks Jeff, I'll keep that in mind for when I bring them back to normal salin.  Any idea what would be the proper timing to go from 1.011 to 1.020 would be?

Larvae are still the ocellaris.  No dottyback spawning yet.  Hopefully one day soon.  I have another pair of orchids, and one of sunrise.  They both eat well, but they don't have to tell tale large bellies yet.  So its still a waiting game.  I'm trying to raise live foods to help fatten them up quicker.  Having better luck with Mysid's than Brine.

Thats awesome, now the fun begins! Hows this process going to differ from the clowns? Also when you say they spawned are they egg layers? Can you discribe it a bit. Congrats Scott!

Thanks guys, it is pretty exciting for me.  My egg laying fish tripled in the month of March.

Dottybacks lay a 1/2" white(ish) ball of sticky eggs every 6-8 days.  They hatch on the 4th night/5th morning.  So, one takes them out on the 4th night, puts them in an egg tumbler near a bright light, and waits about an hour.  So the gestation (if that's the right word) is half that of a clownfish egg.  Also, clown fish eggs hatch 1hr after dark, dottyback eggs 1hr after sunrise (I think).

When the dottyback larvae hatch, they are tiny compared to clown eggs.  Also, they have no yolk sac, so they need to be fed right away.  DHA enriched live foods (rotifers/brine) are required with this species.  And, to top it off, their larval stage lasts almost a month.  Larval fish are much trickier than those past meta.  So, its a much more tricky larval rearing process.  But, its very doable.

New Larval Rearing Room.

Its a bathroom that hasn't been used in 20years :-)  The tile is perfect!  I put a bench up for the BRT's right over the Tub -shakehead .

I put a shelf over the BRT's for my 5gal daily drips.  Currently I siphon 5g out through my rotifer sieve, then drip 5 gal back in.  That is my drip bucket up in the top right hand corner.  The whole row is lit with 2 T12's that I strapped to the upper shelf.

This is where my 13 day olds moved to today.  They are doing well.  17.5gal BRT's I think.  From Tractor Supply.

I asked Harvey to read up on dottyback breeding for me, she got bored -sleeping

Haven't updated in a while.  I've got a batch of 175 ocellaris at 24days old, 25 @11 days, and 200 1 @ day.  Banggai's spawned but ate the eggs at day 3.  Better than their first try.

Sunrise dottybacks have an egg ball!!  woohoo!!!
Now some of these fish just need to learn how not to have eggs for breakfast as SpaDave would put it.

Scott, That is quite the accomplishment there. 2k fish!, Im happy its going so good for you guys!

I didnt realize you were selling local retail. I dont like going all the way over to healthy pet often, but I will have to stop in just to check them out! Any chance to support locally bred fishies! And my wife was just talking about wanting to get a set of baby tomatoes.

I would love to see some pictures of the growout systems.

Congrats on the success. Next stop 10k fish. Wont take long now, just need the space for em!
